Shimmers
in the Field
Shimmers in the Field is an immersive augmented reality soundwalk commissioned by Washington Performing Arts and Tregaron Conservancy, with support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Bringing together site-specific stories, music, field recordings, and sound design, the work invites visitors to wander the Conservancy’s trails while discovering a hidden layer of stories and sounds connected to the landscape.
Inspired by the ways places become intertwined with the people and memories we carry, Shimmers in the Field explores how stories can transform a landscape into something deeply personal. A conversation shared on a familiar path, a loved one remembered through a daily walk, a place of comfort or solitude—these moments become part of the landscapes we inhabit. Alongside personal stories are tales drawn from folklore and imagination, inviting listeners to consider the boundaries we create for ourselves, where we find comfort, and what it means to step beyond the familiar.
As the soundwalk unfolds, these stories become invitations for reflection, encouraging visitors to slow down, listen closely, and make space for their own memories and questions. Experienced through our app on iOS and Android, Shimmers in the Field transforms a walk through Tregaron into a journey through the stories held within a landscape—and the memories it awakens within us.
