the why
By the end of this year, over 7 million people in the U.S. will be living with dementia, a number expected to double by 2050. Beyond patients, millions of caregivers carry the invisible weight of loss — watching memory fade while holding onto their own.
We are living in a loneliness pandemic. While technology floods us with distractions, it rarely gives us tools to process grief or to stay connected to those we love.
In Remembrance, We Breathe is our response: a love letter, a time capsule, and a reminder that the voices of those we lose can still guide us forward.
the what
In Remembrance, We Breathe is an Augmented Reality (AR) Soundwalk that transforms community trails and gardens into immersive spaces for reflection and remembrance.
At its heart, this project asks:
What stories do you carry that no one else can tell?
What do you wish you could ask before it’s too late?
Through recorded interviews, music, and rituals, the project uplifts the voices of dementia patients and caregivers, weaving their memories into a shared sonic landscape. Audiences walk through familiar places that are reimagined as gardens of memory — where each bench, path, and tree can hold a story.
Soundwalks will live in public spaces as an immersive walk, downloadable by QR code.
the who
Chromic Duo is an award-winning creative studio that uses immersive technology to activate public spaces. Our work weaves personal memory, community stories, and generative sound together to create spaces of connection and healing.
We’ve created AR soundwalks and installations with partners like:
The New York Philharmonic (reimagining concert halls during the pandemic)
Smithsonian NMAA (activating hidden stories of Chinatown during rising anti-AAPI hate crimes)
Civic & cultural organizations across the U.S.
the how [3 phase process]
Listening Residency: Interviews and story-collection with local dementia centers, caregivers, and families.
Composition & Design: Co-creating an immersive audio-visual work rooted in these stories and mapping it to a specific space.
Activation: Presenting the AR soundwalk as a public installation, performance, or site-specific community event. Can be made available for future visitors to access via QR code or app.
The Ask
Commissioning partners — Venues, festivals, and campuses to invest in and present the soundwalk and performance installation.
Community partners — organizations with existing ties to the community to host community listening residencies with patients and caregivers.
Arts & health collaborators — Labs, presenting organizations, or healthcare institutions interested in supporting innovative, socially impactful programming.
